Fire Programs

In addition to the "traditional" firefighting activities, Copley Fire Department providesfire-station many services to Township residences and business people such as the following:

CPR Training
The American Heart "Heart Saver/AED" class is held on the first Wednesday of each month at 6 p.m. in the main station at 1540 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road. Residents have the opportunity to receive certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED) in an ongoing program conducted by Copley EMS personnel. The cost of the class is $30 per person and it is by appointment only. To schedule an appointment call Keely Meissner at 330-666-6464.

Disaster Planning
Storms, hazardous material spills and other emergencies can confine families to their homes for days. A little advance planning can minimize the effects of such a disaster. There are actually six basics you should stock in your home: water, food, first-aid supplies, clothing and bedding, tools and emergency supplies and other special items. Within each group are several items you will want to store. A complete list of these items appears in the American Red Cross brochure, "Your Family Disaster Supplies Kit," available at the Fire Department Administrative offices.  Click here for the Federal Government's website on preparedness http://www.ready.gov/.

Everyone in your family should be aware of your emergency plan. Have a family meeting and decide on a place where all of you can meet should you become separated during an emergency. Make arrangements with an out-of-town friend or relative whom all members can call to leave messages. Let everyone know where the Disaster Supply Kit is kept.

Fire Extinguishers
Smoke and CO (Carbon Monoxide) alarms and fire extinguishers are three important pieces of safety equipment for every home. Most everyone is aware of the value of the alarms. But what about fire extinguishers? Fire extinguishers are rated according to the three categories of fires, A, B and C and are sold according to those specified ratings.

Class A fires involve ordinary combustible materials (wood, cloth, paper, rubber and many plastics) that burn to ash. Water may be used to extinguish a Class A fire.

Class B fires involve flammable liquids, oils, greases, tars, oil-based paints and flammable gases. Never throw water on a flammable liquid fire. Never put baking powder, sugar or flour on a grease fire. Sugar will burn and baking powder or flour dust may explode.

Class C fires involve electrical power (electrical wiring or appliances). Never use water on this type of fire. Electrocution or serious shock may result.
The letter of rating on an extinguisher, A, B or C, or a combination of two or three letters, indicates the type of fire it can extinguish. In front of each letter rating is a number. This number indicates the size of a standard test fire the extinguisher can put out. The larger the number, the larger the fire it can handle.
