Ohio’s New Fireworks Law

Beginning July 1, 2022, Ohioans can legally discharge 1.4G consumer fireworks in Ohio. However, discharge is only permitted on specific days and only at specific times.

WHEN CAN OHIOANS DISCHARGE FIREWORKS?

• Only from 4 p.m. until 11 p.m.

• Only on these dates

  • July 3, 4, and 5
  • Labor Day
  •  Diwali
  •  New Year’s Eve (4 p.m. – 11:59 p.m.)
  • Chinese New Year
  • Cinco de Mayo
  • Memorial Day
  • Juneteenth (June 19)

WHERE CAN CONSUMER’S DISCHARGE FIREWORKS?

  • On their own property or on another person’s property with that person’s permission – Except where a political subdivision has opted out of 1.4G consumer fireworks discharge.

FIREWORKS MUST BE DISCHARGED RESPONSIBLY

  • No person can use fireworks while in possession or control of, or under the influence of, any intoxicating liquor, beer, or controlled substance. A person who violates this is guilty of a first degree misdemeanor.

OTHER RESTRICTIONS

  • No person under the age of 18 is permitted to handle or discharge fireworks.
  • Persons under 18 cannot be within 150 feet of the discharge point of aerial fireworks.
  • Aerial devices cannot be discharged within 150 feet of spectators (this includes aerial shells, roman candles, cakes, and bottle rockets).
  • • Non-aerial devices cannot be discharged within 50 feet of spectators (this includes fountains, firecrackers, and ground effect devices).
  • Fireworks cannot be aimed at or discharged towards any person or object (such as buildings).

NOTE:

This new fireworks law takes effect on July 1, 2022. These new rules are a drastic change from the exiting law and are confusing. The Copley Police Department is providing this information as a guideline only. Copley Township officials will monitor how this change in the law affects the health, safety, and welfare of our citizens and may take action in the future to limit the use of fireworks by consumers.

Residents are encouraged to read the new law and familiarize themselves with the numerous aspects of this legislation. The Ohio Revised Code Section is 3743.45. Additional information is available from the Ohio Department of Commerce / State Fire Marshal, https://com.ohio.gov/about-us/media-center/news/ohioans-can-discharge-fireworks-on-specified-holidays-beginning-next-month.

PLEASE USE COMMON SENSE AND EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION WITH CONSUMER GRADE FIREWORKS. Although the law now allows for consumers to purchase and discharge fireworks, 1.4G consumer fireworks are very dangerous! Improper use can lead to very serious injuries. In addition, improper storage and/or accidental ignition of fireworks can result in an explosion that can cause extreme personal injury or property
