Various companies have begun work in the Township installing fiber optic cables for high-speed internet. The extension of fiber in the Township will provide competition for the incumbent carriers providing residents additional choices for internet service. The projects are being initiated by the Incumbent Local Exchange Carriers (ILEC) and Competitive Local Exchange Carriers (CLEC) and are not related to any Township funded projects.
The installation of the infrastructure will require crews to work within the public rights-of-way and utility easements. Fiber optic companies are permitted to install their utilities within the public rights-of-way and utility easements.
These companies will be communicating with property owners by mailers, lawn flags, door knockers, and other methods. They are required to contact the Ohio Utilities Protection Service (OUPS) before construction. This ensures that existing utilities are not damaged during installation of the fiber infrastructure. Flags of various colors may be placed in your yard marking the existing utilities that are underground. It is encouraged to leave the flags until work is completed.
If you have a dog fence, yard irrigation, drainage lines, etc. that extend into the public right-of-way or utility easement you may want to contact any fiber companies that have communicated they will be in the area soon. It is helpful to crews if property owners mark these items as they will not be marked when OUPS is called. Most contractors do carry various irrigation, drainage, and electrical parts to repair these items if they are damaged during construction.
When crews are working in your area, they will install conduit and junction boxes. Following the initial installation rough grading and erosion controls will be put in place. Fiber optics will then be pulled through the conduit and final restoration will take place. Please note that final restoration typically takes place at one time in a regional area.
If you have questions regarding installation of the utilities, please contact the respective fiber company that is installing in your area.
