Coyote mating season is from late January to early March. Coyotes are more active and can be seen more frequently during this time. Coyotes can be dangerous to humans, but the risk is low. Most coyotes are wary of people and avoid them, but they can be unpredictable. Make sure dogs are on a leash.
If you see a coyote, you should remain calm and back away slowly while making loud noises to scare it away. This is called hazing.
- Don't run: Running can trigger a coyote's hunting instincts and make it more likely to chase you.
- Make noise: Yell, clap your hands, or stomp your feet. You can also carry a whistle or air horn.
- Make yourself look big: Wave your arms above your head or swing a walking stick.
- Maintain eye contact: Look the coyote in the eye.
- Throw objects: If necessary, you can throw rocks, sticks, or other objects in the coyote's direction to scare it away.
- Move away slowly: If the coyote continues to approach, back away slowly and move toward buildings or human activity.
- Report it: If the coyote acts aggressively, such as growling, stalking, or chasing, you should report it to the Township Service Department.
